PepTech™ Collagen, Inc., the first new producer to enter the bovine collagen peptides market in nearly 20 years, announces that it has created a new model for the collagen production process end-to-end, from raw material acquisition, through processing and packaging. “The result,” says company President Felipe Chaluppe, “is a new high-purity product, PeptPure ® Collagen Peptides (www.peptpure.com), and a re-engineered process that achieves unprecedented levels of purity, traceability, sustainability, and transparency.”

PepTech is based in Brazil and the production has begun in its plant, strategically located in Brazil near to its raw material supply partners. InterGanics® (www.interganics.com), which conducts the global sales and marketing activities, is based in Chicago.

“Because we were starting fresh and focused 100% on collagen peptides,” Chaluppe says, “we decided to go clean-slate and re-imagine the entire process, from grass-fed hide acquisition to processing to packaging.  The biggest challenge was when we realized it would be crucial to eliminate the intermediate gelatin-making production step.  This step consumes a lot of time, energy, water and chemicals in conventional processes. But it has always been used to remove contaminants that occur naturally in animal hides, like salts, fats and fiber. So we needed to get the same result by other means, and to do it as naturally as possible. After a lot of work and experimentation, we were able to get there through a completely new process that is all-mechanical, without harsh chemicals.  Another remarkable result we have accomplished with the new process is a significant water and energy reduction.  Because we cut the total production time by 50%, our process uses only 50% of water used in conventional processing.”

Other unique new steps in the process also minimize molecular distribution variation, while achieving optimal purification, natural collagen color, neutral taste and uniform particle distribution for optimal solubility, the company states.

For Deep Traceability, Batch Processing Considered Essential

Purpose-built from the ground up to produce collagen peptides, the PepTech™ plant employs many innovations to assure consistent quality, purity, traceability and food safety.

Realizing that ingredient origins and food safety have become increasingly important to consumer product companies, InterGanics says that an essential goal has been to achieve previously unknown levels of traceability and transparency.  Transparency and traceability are becoming more critical, as consumers expect assurances that the ingredients in the products they use are safe and sourced in a responsible manner.  An important key to this, says InterGanics, is batch processing, while the rest of the industry uses a continuous process model. Carefully controlled acquisition and traceability of raw materials—bovine hides—begin the process.

“First,” Chaluppe says, “we have contracted with a set of bovine hide producers that are certified by the Leather Working Group, meaning they operate to the highest industry standards of environmental best practice.  From these farms, an exclusive pool of hides is selected and dedicated to each specific batch to be produced at our production plant.  This way, we can trace that batch back to the specific date and farm.  And because that batch of hides is matched up with that discrete production batch, this gives us a level of traceability not possible in the conventional continuous process.  So now we are confident we can offer our customers unprecedented quality assurance, food safety and traceability.”

InterGanics® has begun marketing PeptPure® Collagen Peptides in the U.S. with plans to expand distribution worldwide in the near future.

Kosher and Halal products are also available.

Understanding Collagen

In order to understand collagen peptides, a few basic concepts are in order.  First, it is important to understand what collagen is. Collagen is a special form of protein. Proteins are large, complex molecules composed of amino acids which are organic compounds.

Protein is found everywhere in our bodies.  Muscles, skin, hair, bones and blood are largely made up of protein. Protein is an essential component of every cell in our bodies which use collagen to repair and build tissues. It is a building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Collagen makes up approximately 30% of the protein in our bodies.

Collagen peptides are broken down into shorter chains of amino acids which enable them to be absorbed into the bloodstream when digested. Once absorbed, collagen peptides are transported to different tissues to repair skin, muscle, bones, joints and used for energy.

Collagen peptides are used as ingredients in the Sports Nutrition, Nutraceutical, Beverage, Cosmetic, Pet Food and other industries.
